2nd of 4 portrait posters I’ve created for this contest so far. Because the theme is being the ‘Messages from Jamaica” I’ve decided to craft a series of posters briefly based on a mail-stamp format. This year my beloved 66-year-old British songwriter STING returned to his reggae roots by making a reggae album with Shaggy. He’s the magic behind a 70s rock-reggae band The Police. “Message in a Bottle’ being a perfect example of the reggae influence which he wrote while spending time in Jamaica nearly 30 years ago. I wouldn’t pretend I didn’t do my best on this portrait in hopes of getting a poster that’s nothing but epic and delicious to all the emotional taste buds.

AFRICAN POSTMAN (a message from Jamaica) is an original artwork specifically made for IRPC’20.
this poster is dedicated to Winston Rodney aka Burning Spear and the title, inspired by one of his famous tune,
is a tribute to him, one of the greatest authors who spread jamaican music and Jah message.

My poster design features a music disk which centre is the island of Jamaica. It reprecents the music and the message spreading all over the world. The colors reprecent the reggae music and Jamaican culture. The poster was created in Adobe Illustrator and it was created for our illustration course.

The Reggae singers of the 1970s were red, green and gold. Now he is a shining gold chain. The power to release emotions is irreplaceable. His music inspires the fans. Every rhythm and melody of his music makes me feel the release and shout out the pressure of life. So the combination of retro and modern is the direct expression of my design.

When I’m listening to reggae music all I can imagine is the shores of Caribbean and an ice-cold Red Stripe. Stress is gone in that kind of moments and I think that reggae is a great way to relieve some pressure in this hectic world. So in this poster design a vinyl record is bending the bars of Babylon and apparently getting free.

Brass instruments are an integral part of reggae. I drew the brazen tubes of the French horn with the flowing, organic feel of reggae music in mind. I also enjoyed the idea of reggae being a small yet bright glimpse of positivity in an otherwise rather dull world, which became the central idea behind my design.

Reggae music | China

The characters wear costumes from reggae music and express themselves in their own way. The background USES reggae red, yellow and green to make the whole picture full of reggae music. The fonts were designed to show people, fat and thin, high and low, listening to the rhythm of reggae.
