REGGAE MUSIC BRINGS PEACE AND JOY IT IS MUSIC OF LOVE AND JOY
My wish was to present with this poster beauty that comes from Jamaica to the World through music and nature.
The geometric color blocks constitute a lion listening to music, expressing that reggae music not only gives people a beautiful enjoyment, but also urges people to forge ahead.
Reggae music touches the world and brings peace to the world
The development of the poster consists of traditional African masks with modern elements, representing a lion, enjoying music.
Reggae brought peace to the world, freedom and dreams to the people.
I love the music and above all the history and the stories behind every kind of music. The mento music is a style of Jamaican folk music that predates and has greatly influenced ska and reggae music. In my research I got hit the pictures of colorful instruments and I tried to draw this instrument, the rumba box, only luggage declared by this girl, reminding in these times where it could be always possible to travel and to take a piece of own cultural heritage without barriers, suspicions and marginalization. In this direction the message from Jamaica and its musical heritage through reggae is and has always been colorful claiming of peace and fight.
“Until the philosophy which holds one race superior and another inferior, is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned…. everywhere is war….”BOB MARLEY
Reggae is the heart of the planet, music is the source of joy, kindness and love, it evokes good feelings in people, penetrates deep into consciousness and is able to turn the Earth, which is shown on the poster, to make people kinder.
Lion symbolizes reggae sharing it’s love to the world.
My initial inspiration was sparked by Mikayla “Koffee” Simpson winning the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Reggae album, making her the first woman to take home that award since the category was added in 1985.
Koffee’s win comes at a time just as female reggae artists are rising in popularity internationally, bucking the trend of being overshadowed by their male counterparts.
Before designing this poster, I had very little knowledge about reggae music. During my research, I discovered so many talented women, like Etana, Queen Ifrica, Grace Jones, Rihanna, Lady Saw, Lila Ike, Shenseea, Sister Nancy, Jah9, Jane Macgizmo, and many others. I would put them all on my poster if I could.
Their music inspired me to create “Clap for Queens of Reggae,” a colorful homage to all female reggae artists. The goddess of music is at the center, wearing the traditional colors of Jamaica. She watches over the two women who represent traditional and modern reggae. They have come a long way, but there is still much work to do.
With this poster, I hope to send a message of awareness, hope, and inspiration while also celebrating the contributions that reggae music has brought to the world.
